"Nothing behind me, everything ahead of me, as is ever so on the road."
- Jack Kerouac  (1922 – 1969)

Famed American writer and poet Jack Kerouac was well known for his novel On the Road, which became an American classic, pioneering the Beat Generation in the 1950s.

Born in 1922 in Lowell, Jack Kerouac received a football scholarship to Columbia University, and first arrived in New York City at the age of 17. However, he dropped out of the university, after his injuries and disagreement with his coach. He then met a group of friends, including Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs; and eventually developed the Beat Generation, a literary movement which later influenced American culture and politics in the post-World War II era.

In the late 1940s, Kerouac took several cross-country road trips with his friend Neal Cassady, and the experiences inspired Kerouac to his greatest novel On the Road. The story was part fact and part fiction, and was written in a unique style of writing, that Kerouac termed it as “spontaneous prose”. Kerouac became famous after the publication in 1957, and the novel was considered as one of the classic that defined the Beat Generation.

His other notable works include Maggie Cassidy, The Subterraneans, The Dharma Bums and Big Sur. In October 1969, he died from an abdominal hemorrhage due to chronic heavy drinking.
